Ouch!

(…) interruption

This week I began taking Capoeira.

I’ve been talking about it for a while now and since I’m trying to do things rather than talk about doing them, I’m doing it. I’ve only attended two classes so far and it’s pretty amazing. As of my introductory class I was welcomed wholeheartedly to a new family. The energy is awesome and the support is unreal. Unlike other martial arts forms that have a tendency… to be a bit rigid. Capoeira is more like a dance and can seem sort of… free form at first, when watching it. Like all martial arts however… it’s all technique… When two people spar it’s refereed to as a game. The two interact playfully with one another in a sparing dance rather than a combat. Because there is so much movement involved in this it is a crazy workout. Probably one of the best workouts I’ve ever had. You use your entire body and muscles that you don’t regularly use, which is why I’ve titled this post ouch!

During the first night I created and ripped a blister off my left big toe and got one started… on my right. The skin loosened but didn’t rip. I also started a blister on the ball of my left foot. All these things made my second night a bit harder or at least a tad more painful. After learning Ginga , the basic movement for which everything is based, I got to practice that for a good while (and will be practicing it… for probably the first year as it becomes ingrained in my head)… Then I learned Aú; a cartwheel. I didn’t have too much trouble getting into the swing of this as cartwheels are pretty fun to do regardless of how good or not good your form is. Anyway, after my first two days I’m stiff and crazy sore… Both of my forearms are tender my left leg has a Charley horse that won’t go away and my body is overall stiff. As if I just got the flu. On a positive note, I haven’t sweat that much in a very long time. Most workouts don’t cause me to perspire, unless I’m really getting pushed. Some of the opening workouts, before even learning any new moves, was like a Zumba class. Fast… explosive, cardio; getting your blood flowing and your muscles ready to learn.

I’m considering making myself an Epsom salt bath tonight and letting my muscles soak for a while. Hopefully I will be refreshed, less sore and ready to attack again on Monday night. And, even if I’m not, I will be there. I’m looking forward to not only getting a great workout and learning something that will help my balance and overall grace. But the fact that I’m becoming part of a community of really awesome people. I need to surround myself with awesome. As I wish to be truly awesome myself.
